Response Time Is the Most Underrated Sales Metric in Home Services

Speed to first contact correlates with close rate more strongly than almost anything else in your funnel — and it's the easiest thing to fix.

Response Time Is the Most Underrated Sales Metric in Home Services

Home service businesses obsess over ad spend, review counts, and pricing — and underrate the one variable that's almost entirely within their control: how fast they respond to a new lead.

The five-minute window

Studies across multiple industries have found that contacting a lead within five minutes dramatically improves the odds of a conversation actually happening, compared to waiting even 30 minutes. Homeowners calling about a leaking pipe or a dead AC unit are usually calling more than one company.

Why this is a systems problem, not a people problem

Your team isn't slow because they don't care — they're slow because they're on a roof, under a sink, or driving between jobs. The fix isn't "try harder," it's removing the dependency on a human noticing the missed call in real time.

What to measure instead

If you track one number next quarter, track median time-to-first-response on inbound calls. It will tell you more about why leads are or aren't converting than almost any other metric in your business.
